PERAMPANEL

Perampanel is an anticonvulsant that works by slowing abnormal nerve impulses in the brain.

This medication is used in combination with other medications to treat certain types of seizures in people who are 12 years of age or older.

Do not use Perampanel if:

  • You are allergic to any ingredient in Perampanel
  • You have severe liver or kidney problems, or you are on dialysis
  • You are taking rifampin or St. John’s wort

If any of these apply to you, contact your doctor or health care provider right away.

Side effects of this medication include:

  • Dizziness or a sense of spinning
  • Drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Weight gain
  • Irritability
  • Weakness
  • Problems with coordination
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Blurred or double vision

If any of these apply to you, contact your doctor or health care provider right away.

Precautions

Before using Perampanel, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • If you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a history of liver or kidney problems
  • If you have a history of mental or mood problems (eg, depression), behavior problems (eg, aggression, hostility), suicidal thoughts or actions, or alcohol or other substance abuse or dependence
  • If you take other medicine for seizures

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may interfere with how your medication works. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Carbamazepine, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, primidone, rifampin, or St. John’s wort because they may decrease Perampanel’s effectiveness
  • Hormonal Birth Control (eg, birth control pills) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Perampanel

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing. Symptoms of overdose may include the following:

  • Dizziness
  • Unusual changes in behavior or mood
  • Agitation
  • Aggressive behavior
