METHSUXIMIDE

Methsuximide is an anticonvulsant which helps decrease seizures. It works by reducing abnormal nerve transmission in the brain.

This medication is used to prevent and control a certain type of seizure (absence or petit mal seizure). It works by controlling the abnormal electrical activity in the brain that occurs during a seizure. Methsuximide may be used alone or with other medications.

Do not use Methsuximide if you are allergic to any ingredient in Methsuximide or to other succinimides (eg, ethosuximide).

Side effects of this drug include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach Pain
  • Loss Of Appetite
  • Weight Loss
  • Hiccups
  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty Coordinating Movements
  • Confusion
  • Slowed Thinking
  • Unreasonable Fear Of Developing A Serious Illness
  • Swollen Eyelids
  • Blurred Vision
  • Sensitivity To Light

Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Sore Throat, Fever, Chills, And Other Signs Of Infection
  • Joint Pain Or Swelling
  • Muscle Pain
  • Red, Itchy Rash, Especially On The Face
  • Fever With No Known Cause
  • Hives
  • Blisters

Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

Precautions

Before taking Methsuximide, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to ethosuximide; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can trigger allergic reactions or other problems.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver problems and kidney problems.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may interfere with how your medication works. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital) or hydantoins (eg, phenytoin) because the side effects of Methsuximide may be increased
  • Lamotrigine because its effectiveness may be decreased by Methsuximide

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing. Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • slow/shallow breathing
  • severe drowsiness
  • loss of consciousness
