EVOLOCUMAB

Evolocumab is a fully human monoclonal antibody that inhibits proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9). PCSK9 is a protein that targets LDL receptors for degradation and thereby reduces the liver’s ability to remove LDL-C, or “bad” cholesterol, from the blood.

Evolocumab is a monoclonal antibody designed for the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., rash, urticaria) have been reported in patients treated with this medication, including some that led to discontinuation of therapy. If signs or symptoms of serious allergic reactions occur, discontinue treatment.

Common side effects may include:

  • redness, pain, or bruising where an injection was given;
  • back pain;
  • flu symptoms; or
  • cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reactions like hives, severe itching; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Precautions

Before taking evolocumab, it is important to know that:

  • You should not use evolocumab if you are allergic to it.
  • To make sure evolocumab is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease
  • It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. It is not known whether evolocumab passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby.
  • Evolocumab is not approved for use by anyone younger than 13 years old.

 

Interactions

No drug interactions have been determined by the manufacturer. However, you should tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.

In case of overdose, seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line immediately.
