Kojic acid is a chelation agent produced by several species of fungi. Koji is the Japanese common name of Aspergillus oryzae. Kojic acid is a by-product in the fermentation process of malting rice, for use in the manufacturing of sake, the Japanese rice wine.

Kojic acid also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. The cocrystals of kojic acid with quercetin were found to have two times better cytotoxic activity to human cervical cancer cells (HeLa) and human colon cancer cells (Caco-2) in comparison with quercetin itself.
Discontinue use if you experience any rash, redness, itchiness or swelling from a skin lightening product. Long-term use of any skin lightening product may increase the risk of sunburn, so use sunscreen as directed.
Contact dermatitis is the most common side effect of topical kojic acid use. This irritation and inflammation of the skin may lead to a rash and red, swollen skin.
