How to use amifostine crystalline intravenous

Intravenous injection by a health care professional, usually 15 to 30 minutes before cancer treatment or as directed by your doctor.

Drink plenty of fluids while using this medication to decrease side effects unless otherwise presribed by doctor.

Common side effects include: Flushing, chills, unusual feelings of warmth/coldness, dizziness, or drowsiness may occur.

Serious side effects occur: fainting, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, seizure.

Contact your doctor if you experience allergic reactions or symptoms mentioned above.

Precautions

Inform your doctor or pharmacist your allergies, medical history, especially of: low/high blood pressure, heart disease (e.g., irregular heartbeat, congestive heart failure), kidney disease, previous stroke.

Avoid activities that require alertness as this drug can make you drowsy.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women must consult their doctor first before using this medication.

 

Interactions

Watch out if you are taking drugs for blood pressure, drugs that cause drowsiness such as: certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine), medicine for sleep or anxiety (e.g., alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., chlorpromazine, risperidone, trazodone).

Overdose

Get emergency medical help when overdose is suspected.

Missed Dose: For best treatment outcome, follow your schedule of dosage.

Storage: Not applicable. This medication is given in a hospital or clinic and will not be stored at home.
