Perindopril belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, which help relax blood vessels. ACE inhibitors prevent an enzyme in your body from producing angiotensin II, a substance in your body that narrows your blood vessels and releases hormones that can raise your blood pressure. This narrowing can cause high blood pressure and force your heart to work harder.
Perindopril is used to treat high blood pressure. This medication is also used to prevent heart attacks in patients with a certain type of heart disease (stable coronary artery disease).
Do not give quinapril to pregnant women and persons with history of angioedema related to previous ACE inhibitor treatment. Angioedema is the rapid edema, or swelling, of the area beneath the skin or mucosa. It is normally an allergic reaction, but can also be hereditary. Do not give to patients with diabetes and kidney impairment who are taking the anti-hypertension drug, aliskiren.
Dizziness, lightheadedness, tiredness, or dry cough may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Precautions
Before taking perindopril, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other ACE inhibitors (such as captopril, lisinopril); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: history of an allergic reaction which included swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat (angioedema), blood filtering procedures (such as LDL apheresis, dialysis), high level of potassium in the blood, liver disease, loss of too much body water and minerals (dehydration).
Interactions
Some products that may interact with this drug include: aliskiren, certain drugs that weaken the immune system/increase the risk of infection (such as everolimus, sirolimus), gold injections, lithium, drugs that may increase the level of potassium in the blood (such as ARBs including losartan/valsartan, birth control pills containing drospirenone), sacubitril.
Some products have ingredients that could raise your blood pressure or worsen your heart failure. Tell your pharmacist what products you are using, and ask how to use them safely (especially cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen).
Symptoms of overdose include hypotension, bradycardia, circulatory shock, renal failure, hyperventilation, electrolyte disturbances, tachycardia, palpitations, dizziness, anxiety, and cough. If overdose is suspected, bring the victim to the hospital immediately.
