Description: Once inside the body, bambuterol is broken down into terbutaline, which is a type of medicine known as a short-acting beta 2 agonist. Terbutaline works by acting on receptors in the lungs called beta 2 receptors. When terbutaline stimulates these receptors it causes the muscles in the airways to relax. This allows the airways to open.
Treatment of asthma
Bambuterol should not be given to pregnant women and people with seriously impaired liver function. It can be used by people with kidney impairment, but dose adjustments are necessary.
Fatigue, nausea, palpitations, headache, dizziness and tremor.
Precautions
Give with caution in patients with liver cirrhosis and other causes of severely impaired liver function; underlying severe heart disease (e.g. ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia or severe heart failure); thyrotoxicosis, diabetes mellitus, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, predisposition to angle closure glaucoma; and moderate to severe kidney impairment. Bambuterol is not intended for the relief of acute bronchospasm or in patients with unstable respiratory disease.
Interactions
Concomitant administration of bambuterol with corticosteroids, diuretics, and xanthine derivatives (such as theophylline) increases the risk of hypokalemia (decreased levels of potassium in the blood).
Overdose symptoms include headache, anxiety, tremor, nausea, tonic muscle cramps, palpitations, tachycardia and cardiac arrhythmias. If overdose is suspected, bring the victim to the hospital immediately.
