IPRATROPIUM BROMIDE

Ipratropium bromide belongs to a class of medicines known as bronchodilators. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and you can breathe more easily.

Ipratropium is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by ongoing lung disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. It is used by inhaler or nebulizer. Onset of action is typically within 15 to 30 minutes and lasts for three to five hours. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school.

Ipratropium can cause bronchospasms that can be life-threatening. It can also cause rash, itching, or serious allergic reactions involving closure of the airways.

Because of its anticholinergic effect it may worsen symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia and narrow-angle glaucoma.

Dizziness, nausea, stomach upset, dry mouth, or constipation may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Precautions

Before using ipratropium, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or to tiotropium; or to atropine or other belladonna-type drugs; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Interactions

Use with other anticholinergic drugs (for example, atropine) may increase the occurrence of side effects.

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, bring the victim to the hospital immediately.
