Nifuroxazide

Management of Diarrhea

Should not be used in patients with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to nitrofuran derivatives. Premature & infants <2 yr. Fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency.
  • Caution for use in patients with
    • Patient on a low-Na diet. Liver disease, alcoholism, epilepsy. Pregnancy & lactation.

Allergic reactions, skin rash, urticaria, Quincke’s edema or anaphylactic shock.

 

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Taking multiple drugs may affect how medications work and/or cause unwanted side effects. List down all the medications you are taking and inform your physician and pharmacist. Do not take, discontinue, or alter any dose of medications without prior approval of your physician.

Products that may interact with this medication include:

  • CNS depressants.
  • Taken with or without food.
  • Capsule
    • Adult 4 capsules (800 mg)/day in to 2-times a day.
    • Children ≥6 yr 3-4 capsules (600-800 mg)/day in times a day
  • Suspension

Children >2 years old 660 mg/day in 3 intakes. Must not exceed 7 days treatment duration.
