CEFALEXIN

Cephalosporins

Cefalexin is indicated in the treatment of the following infections: Respiratory tract infections; otitis media; skin and soft tissue infections; bone and joint infections; genito-urinary infections, including acute prostatitis and dental infections.

 

DOSAGE

  • May be taken with or without food
  • Adult: By mouth
    • Skin and soft tissue infections 500 mg every 12 hrs.
  • Uncomplicated UTI
    • 500 mg every 12 hrs. for 7-14 days
  • Bone and joint infections
    • Resp tract infections 250 mg every 6 hrs.
  • Streptococcal pharyngitis
    • 500 mg every 12 hours for at least 10 days. Max: 4 g/day in divided
  • Should not be used in patients with the following conditions:
    • Hypersensitivity to cefalexin, other cephalosporins.
  • Caution for use in patients with:
    • History of hypersensitivity to penicillins, GI disease particularly colitis. Renal impairment.
  • If you are planning to be pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of use with your doctor.

Before breast-feeding, consult your physician.

GI disturbances (e.g. nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort), dyspepsia; allergic reactions (e.g. rash urticaria, angioedema); genital and anal pruritus, genital candidiasis, vaginitis and vaginal discharge, dizziness, fatigue, headache, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, arthralgia, arthritis and joint disorders; eosinophilia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia, slightly elevated AST and ALT. Rarely, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis; cholestatic jaundice, transient hepatitis, Anaphylaxis, pseudomembranous colitis.

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may inclue:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • epigastric distress
  • diarrhoea
  • haematuria

 

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Taking multiple drugs may affect how medications work and/or cause unwanted side effects. List down all the medications you are taking and inform your physician and pharmacist. Do not take, discontinue, or alter any dose of medications without prior approval of your physician.

  • Products that may interact with this medication include:
    • Metformin, vit K antagonists (e.g. warfarin), potent diuretics (e.g. ethacrynic acid, furosemide) , potentially nephrotoxic antibiotics (e.g. aminoglycosides, polymyxin, colistin), oral anticoagulants, cefalexin and cytotoxic drugs for leukaemia, uricosuric drugs (e.g. probenecid), Na picosulfate, BCG and typhoid vaccine and multivitamins/minerals.

 

STORAGE

Store between 20-25°C. Refrigerate reconstituted susp.
