WATERING EYES

Overview & Facts

Watering eyes occur if too many tears are produced or if they cannot drain away properly. It may be caused by problems with the glands of the eyes, sagging of the lower eyelid away from the eye, rolling inwards of the eyelid, inflammation of the eyelid edges, blocked or narrowed tear ducts, allergy, irritation or infection.

Diagnosis & Medications

DIAGNOSIS

  • Physical Examination
    • Look for blockages in your tear ducts
      • Insertion of a tiny probe into the drainage channels
    • X-ray with dye
      • help pinpoint the location of the blockage.

 

Recommended Medications

  • Medication may be needed if the cause is an allergy or infection
  • Surgery may be needed if a tear duct is blocked.
  • If watering eyes aren’t interfering with your life, you may choose not to have treatment.
