OCULAR MIGRAINE (Retinal Migraine)

Retinal migraine is an eye condition that causes brief attacks of blindness or visual problems like flashing lights in one eye. These episodes can be frightening, but in most cases they’re harmless and short-lived, and eyesight goes back to normal afterwards.

Retinal migraine is caused by the blood vessels to the eye suddenly constricting (narrowing), reducing the blood flow to the eye.

It may be triggered by:

  • stress
  • smoking
  • high blood pressure
  • hormonal birth control pills
  • exercise
  • bending over
  • high altitude
  • dehydration
  • low blood sugar
  • excessive heat

Loss of vision

  • Complete visual loss for about 10-20 minutes
  • One-sided visual loss characterized as becoming slowly blurred or dimmed
  • Flashes of light
  • Scotoma- blank spots

Headache

  • May happen before, during, or after an attack of retinal migraine

DIAGNOSIS

  • History and Physical Examination
    • Funduscopy(ophthalmoscopy)
      • during an attack, they may be able to see the decreased blood flow to your eye
    • more likely you’ll be diagnosed based on an account of your symptoms.

 

RECOMMENDED MEDICATIONS

  • propranolol
  • verapamil
  • nifedipine
  • aspirin
