TAPEWORM INFECTIONS

Tapeworms are flat, ribbon-like parasites that common affect a person’s intestine. Humans are commonly infected with these parasites by ingestion of contaminated food or eating raw, contaminated meats such as pork, beef or fish.

Tapeworm infections often do not cause specific symptoms and patients are often unaware that they have them until severe infection causes a more obvious symptom effect. Depending on the type of tapeworm found within the intestines, symptoms could include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss or loss of appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Malnutrition (ie. Vitamin B12 deficiency leading to anemia)
  • Jaundice (in severe cases)

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of tapeworm infection relies heavily in the presence and identification of parasite’s egg, larvae or segments in patient’s stool exam.

Physicians may request the following tests:

  • Stool exam
  • Complete blood count with platelet
  • Radiographic studies (X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan or MRI scan)
  • Liver function tests

 

Recommended Management

  • Anti-helmintic medication (ie. Albendazole)
  • Prevention by practicing proper hygeine and thoroughly cooking meats
