GINGIVITIS

Overview & Facts

  • It is non-destructive disease that manifests as gum inflammation.
  • Most common form is due to response to plaque sticking to tooth surfaces, called plaque-induced gingivitis.
  • Reeversible with good oral hygiene.
    • If not treated or controlled, may lead to periodontitis.

Types & Symptoms

  • Nonspecific symptoms manifested as:
    • Swollen gums
    • Bright red or purple gums
    • Tender gums
    • Bleeding gums or bleeding after brushing and/or flossing
    • Bad breath (halitosis)

  • Physician may do/request:
    • History & Physical Exam
    • X-ray

 

RECOMMENDED MEDICATIONS

  • Proper oral hygiene and regular visits to dentist.
  • Antibiotics (as prescribed by physician).
