TESTICLE LUMPS AND SWELLINGS

Testicle lumps and swellings may be a symptom of testicular cancer in rare circumstances. However, the majority of lumps are harmless (non-cancerous). The testicles are an essential component of the male reproductive organs. They create testosterone and sperm (male sex hormone). Moreover, the testicles are contained inside the scrotum, a loose pouch of skin that hangs down below the penis.

TYPES

The four most common types of testicle lumps and swellings are as follows:

Varicocele. Varicoceles’ exact cause is unknown. Most specialists feel that irregularities in the veins that drain the testicles are to blame.

Hydrocele. It is an enlargement produced by fluid surrounding the testicle.

Spermatocele. It is a fluid-filled protrusion in the epididymis. It includes sperm, and it is called an epididymal cyst.

Testicular torsion. It is a sudden, painful sort of enlargement that happens when a testicle twists, cutting off the blood supply to the testicles – is a medical emergency.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of testicle lumps and swellings vary depending on the type. The following are some of them:

DIAGNOSIS

If you discover any lumps or swellings in your testicles, see your doctor immediately. A lump can be a symptom of testicular cancer is extremely uncommon circumstances (less than four in 100 lumps). Your doctor will ask you with the following:

  • Have you ever felt pain – and if so, where was it, how terrible it was, and how long exactly?
  • Do you have any other indications, such as urinary pain or urethral discharge?
  • Do you have a background of trauma, such as a groin injury from sports?

Your doctor will also do a physical examination of your testicles to ensure that:

  • The size of your testicles
  • the lump or swelling’s location
  • whether the lump produces discomfort when touched
  • whether the lump is hard or soft

TREATMENT

Treating testicle lumps and swelling may depend on the disease types. Mostly the treatments include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Wearing tight-fitting underwear
  • Surgery
