Heart Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Heart disease is the leading cause of death and among the top 10 causes of sickness in the country. Unhealthy lifestyle choices and risk factors can make a person more likely to develop heart disease and suffer a heart attack.

It’s important to know the warning signs of a heart attack, so you can seek medical help immediately.

Heart attack signs and symptoms vary, but the most common include:

  • Chest discomfort described as pressure, tightness, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation; it may spread to your arms, neck, jaw or back.
  • Nausea, indigestion, heartburn or abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold sweat
  • Fatigue
  • Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness

Although a heart attack can be sudden and intense in some cases, most start slowly. The most common heart attack symptom among men and women is chest pain or discomfort. However, women are to some degree more likely than men to experience some of the other common heart attack symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

Other warning signs of heart disease include:

  • Extreme exhaustion or unexplained weakness (especially for women)
  • Long-lasting cough that produces white or pink phlegm
  • Swollen legs, feet, and ankles
  • Irregular heart beat (arrythmia)
  • Unusually loud snoring that sounds like gasping or choking can be a sign of sleep apnea, which is a risk factor for heart disease.

Consult your doctor immediately if you experience the above heart symptoms.
