TIPS TO PREVENT DENGUE AT HOME

Dengue is an acute viral infection that is transmitted through the bite of dengue-infected Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These mosquitoes usually bite between 2 hours after sunrise and 2 hours before sunset and can be found inside and outside the house. Although a year-round disease, dengue infection risk increases during the rainy season when stagnant water provides a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Here are steps that you can take to prevent dengue in your home:

  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
  • Apply insect repellent lotion as directed. Read the label instructions before applying.
  • Use screens on windows and doors. Repair holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
  • Use air conditioning when available.
  • Sleep under a mosquito bed net if air-conditioned or screened rooms are not available.
  • Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out items that hold water. These include tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpots, or trash containers. Check inside and outside your home. Mosquitoes lay eggs near water.
