VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER CESAREAN (VBAC)

If during your past pregnancy, you had a Caesarean section and you’re pregnant now, you may have the option to having a repeat Caesarean section again, or instead, have a vaginal birth after cesarean  or VBAC.

For some women, VBAC is a choice. Indeed, those who have a trial of labor after a cesarean section may  have an effective vaginal birth.

VBAC isn’t for everybody, however. Certain factors like uterine scar may make the choice wrong. A few hospitals don’t offer VBAC because they don’t have the right staff or equipment to deal with emergency Caeseran sections. In case you’re thinking about VBAC, your OB-Gyne physician can assist you.

SYMPTOMS

While VBAC may have a few complications than a repeat C-section, failure of vaginal birth can lead to uterine rupture, where the uterus leaks open. This may lead to excessive bleeding and can bring about harm to both mother and baby.  In some cases, the uterus have to  be removed in the form of hysterectomy to stop bleeding.

Uterine rupture is uncommon, occurring in less than 1 percent of women who attempt VBAC . In case you’re thinking about VBAC, ensure that the hospital is prepared to manage uterine rupture.

TREATMENT

If you’ve had a C-section and you’re pregnant again, you may start discussing VBAC at your first pre-natal visit. Talk to your physician about your expectations. Your doctor may utilize your medical history to determine the probability that you’ll have an effective VBAC.

Allow labor to start normally. Having induced labor or augmented labor decreases the probability of VBAC.

Be adaptable. Some pregnancy complications may require a C-section. For instance, you may have a Caesarean section if you have placenta or umbilical cord problems, if your infant is in an unusual position, or if your labor does not progress.
