FIRST MENSTRUAL PERIOD

FIRST MENSTRUAL PERIOD

Menarche or first menstrual period is the later stages of puberty. It starts between the age of 12 to 13, though it can occur earlier or later.

The age for first menstrual period can differ with races, countries and communities. Complete puberty will take about 2-5 years.

The age for menarche has declined due to various factors like environmental contaminants, poor nutrition, unhealthy lifestyle etc.

Symptoms

The major symptom of menstruation is bleeding from the vagina.

The other symptoms are listed below:

  • Fatigue
  • Food cravings
  • Lower back pain
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Sore or bloated breasts
  • Headache
  • Irritability and mood swings

Treatment

It is recommended to talk to your daughter about puberty – the earlier the better. Do not explain everything in a single discussion; rather, do it in multiple, short conversations.

If your child asks about puberty or menstruation, you should answer them honestly and openly. You can start talking about it even if your child is not asking any questions.

Start with questions like “do you know anything about puberty?” Let your child tell what she knows and clarify her doubts.

Some kids might be hesitant or don’t like to discuss this topic. But they need to know the facts about puberty and menstruation. This helps your child eliminate unwanted anxiety or fears. It also serves as a foundation for your child’s future discussion regarding sexuality and dating.
