ISOTRETINOIN

Isotretinoin is a retinoid that is synthetically produced and which diminishes sebaceous gland size and represses sebum formation. It likewise manages cell growth and development and has antiinflammatory effects on the skin.

Isotretinoin is used as a treatment for severe acne.

Do not give isotretinoin to patients with the following conditions:

  • Hypervitaminosis A
  • Hyperlipidemia
  • Hepatic impairment
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • Concomitant use of tetracyclines

Isotretinoin may have the following side effects:

  • Erythema
  • Skin exfoliation
  • Stinging sensation
  • Pruritus
  • Irritation
  • Tenderness
  • Dry skin
  • Hirsutism
  • Photosensitivity
  • Skin pigmentation

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Women of childbearing potential
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Photoallergy
  • Psychiatric disorder
  • Hypertriglyceridaemia
  • Childhood osteoporosis
  • Osteomalacia

 

Interactions

Isotretinoin may interact with the following medicines:

  • Progesterone
  • Anti-acne agents
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Isotretinoin
  • Tetracycline
