METHIMAZOLE

Methimazole is an antithyroid drug. It lessens the creation of the thyroid hormones by restraining the consolidation of iodide in the thyroglobulins of the thyroid gland.

Methimazole is used in the following:

  • Mild to severe hyperthyroidism
  • Grave’s disease
  • Preparation of hyperthyroid patients for thyroidectomy
  • Used as an adjunct to radioactive iodine therapy

Do not give Methimazole to people with the following conditions:

  • Proven hypersensitivity to thiamazole or carbimazole
  • Agranulocytosis during previous treatment with thiamazole, carbimazole or PTU

Methimazole may have the following side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Gastric discomfort
  • Headache
  • Hair loss
  • Bone marrow depression
  • Fever
  • Arthralgia
  • Arthritis
  • Rashes
  • Leukopenia

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Vasculitis
  • Lupus erythematosus syndrome
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Nose bleeding
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Interactions

Methimazole may interact with the following medicines:

  • Amiodarone
  • Beta-blockers
  • Digoxin
  • Potassium iodide
  • Sodium iodide
  • Theophyllines
  • Warfarin

Overdose & Brands

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Upset stomach
  • Headache
  • Joint pain
  • Fever
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding
