MESALAZINE

Meropenem Trihydrate is an antibiotic that is utilized to treat many bacterial infections. This drug is known as a carbapenem-type of antibiotic. It works by inhibiting the growth of microscopic organisms.

This drug is given as an infusion into a vein as prescribed by the doctor, normally at regular intervals.

Mesalazine is used in the following:

  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Ulcerative proctitis

Do not use Mesalazine in patients with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to salicylates
  • Severe liver or kidney impairment

Mesalazine may have the following side effects:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Rarely, blood dyscrasia
  • Myocarditis
  • Pericarditis
  • Pancreatitis
  • Lupus-like syndrome
  • Skin reactions
  • Hypersensitivity reactions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Myocarditis or pericarditis
  • Active peptic ulceration
  • History of sulfasalazine hypersensitivity
  • Mild to moderate liver or kidney impairment
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Interactions

Mesalazine may interact with the following medicines:

  • Lactulose
  • Azathioprine
  • Mercaptopurine
  • Nephrotoxic drugs
  • Digoxin

Symptoms of overdose may include the following:

  • Tinnitus
  • Vertigo
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Sweating
  • Seizures
  • Hyperventilation
  • Dyspnea
  • Vomiting
