BIMATOPROST

Bimatoprost is a drug that is utilized to treat increased pressure within the eye that is caused by glaucoma (open-angle) or other eye diseases such as ocular hypertension. Bringing down pressure inside the eye can help avoid visual loss. This drug works by controlling fluid movements within the eye to normalize eye pressure.

Bimatoprost is used in the treatment of the following:

  • Ocular hypertension
  • Open-angle glaucoma
  • Hypotrichosis of eyelashes

 

Do not give Bimatoprost to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to bimatoprost
  • Closed-angle glaucoma
  • Inflammatory or neovascular glaucoma
  • Active intraocular inflammation (such asiritis, uveitis)

Bimatoprost may have the following side effects:

  • Ocular pruritus
  • Swelling
  • Irritation and burning sensation
  • Conjunctival hyperemia
  • Dry eye symptoms
  • Blurred vision
  • Periorbital erythema
  • Increased lacrimation
  • Hypertension
  • Abnormal liver function tests

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patient with active intra ocular inflammation, such as uveitis
  • Aphakic patient
  • Pseudophakic patient with torn posterior lens capsule
  • Risk factor for macular oedema
  • History of herpes simplex, uveitisor iritis
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Interactions

Bimatoprost may interact with the following medicines:

  • Latanoprost
  • Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs)

If overdose is suspected, seek immediate help right away.
