NICOTINAMIDE

Nicotinamide is a derivative of Vitamin B3 and is included in the coenzymes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). These two play an important role in cell metabolism such as in the building and repair of body tissues, fat metabolism and glucose metabolism. It also has anti-inflammatory effects.

It is now being used as a dietary supplement and as a treatment for acne. Is available in oral and skin formulations, as well as an injectable preparation along with other B vitamins.

Nicotinamide is used in the treatment of the following:

Do not give Nicotinamide in people with the following conditions:

  • Patients suffering from severe shock
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Severe disturbances of liver or kidney function
  • Disturbances of amino acid metabolism.

Nicotinamide may have the following side effects:

  • Dry skin (topical)
  • Jaundice
  • Chronic liver damage
  • Abnormal prothrombin time
  • Hypoalbuminemia
  • Irritation
  • Pruritus
  • Erythema
  • Burning sensation (topical)

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

 

Interactions

Nicotinamide may interact with the following medicines:

  • HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors

If you think you may have used this medicine more than the usual dosage, seek medical help immediately.
