CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOSE

Carboxymethyl cellulose is a substance that is known to be a cellulose derivative. It is composed of a cellulose structure that is made of glucopyranose and hydroxyl molecules. It is often added to food to modify viscosity or as a thickener and emulsifier. It is a viscous polymer that has been shown to be effective as artificial tears and can treat dry eyes.

Carboxymethyl cellulose is used in the following:

  • For the symptomatic relief of burning, irritation and discomfort of the eyes due to dryness or exposure to wind or sun

Do not give Carboxymethyl Cellulose to people with the following conditions:

Carboxymethyl Cellulose may have the following side effects:

  • Blurred vision
  • Eye redness
  • Eye discomfort or irritation
  • Increased sensitivity of eyes to light
  • Matting or stickiness of eyelashes
  • Swelling of eyelids
  • Watering of eyes

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Blurred vision
