N ACETYL CYCTEINE

N acetyl cysteine is derived from the amino acid L-cysteine. It has various uses in medicine. It is used as an antidote against acetaminophen and against poisoning due to carbon monoxide. It is prescribed for unstable angina, blockage in bile duct in newborn, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s disease and also for an eye infection named keratoconjunctivitis.

It is used in treating allergic reactions caused by anti-seizure medication called phenytoin. It can reduce homocysteine levels and risk of stroke and heart attack in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease.

Uses

N acetyl cysteine is used as treatment for the following:

  • Cough
  • Paracetamol poisoning
  • Dry eye associated with abnormal mucus production

Warnings

Do not give N acetyl cysteine to people with the following conditions:

  • Those using phenylketonurics
  • Hypersensitivity

  • Bronchospasm
  • Angioedema
  • Rash
  • Pruritus
  • Hypotension
  • Hypertension
  • Flushing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Syncope
  • Sweating
  • Arthralgia
  • Blurred vision
  • Liver function disturbances
  • Acidosis
  • Convulsion
  • Cardiac or resp arrest
  • Hemoptysis
  • Rhinorrhea
  • Stomatitis (inhalation)
  • Itching
  • Irritation
  • Redness

Precautions

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patient with asthma or history of bronchospasm
  • History of peptic ulcer disease
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Interactions

N acetyl cysteine may interact with the following medicines:

  • Phenylketonurics
  • Antibiotics
