LEVOBUPIVACAINE

Levobupivacaine is a drug that is known as a long acting local anesthetic. It is structurally related to bupivacaine and blocks pain signals in sensory and motor nerves by interacting with voltage sensitive sodium channels on the cell membrane. It is given through injection.

Levobupivacaine is used in anesthesia.

  • Hypovolaemia
  • Complete heart block

Levobupivacaine may have the following side effects:

  • Central nervous system effects such as restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Respiratory depression and convulsions
  • Neuromuscular and skeletal weakness
  • Blurred vision
  • Pupillary constriction
  • Hypotension
  • Bradycardia and cardiovascular collapse which may lead to cardiac arrest
  • Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medines:

  • Epilepsy
  • Respiratory impairment
  • Impaired cardiac conduction
  • Bradycardia
  • Severe shock
  • Acute porphyria
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Liver or kidney impairment
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • Elderly or debilitated patients

Interactions

Levobupivacaine may interact with the following medicines:

  • Enzyme-inducing drugs such as rifampicin
  • Substrates for or inhibitors of CYP3A4 and CYP1A2
