Levetiracetam is a drug that is also known as an anticonvulsant and an antiepileptic. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown but it has been shown to affect calcium levels in the nerve cells by partial inhibition of N-type calcium currents and by decreasing the release of calcium from the nerve cells. It also facilitates GABAergic inhibitory transmission and binds to synaptic proteins that control the release of neurotransmitters.
