HYDROXYCARBAMIDE

Hydroxycarbamide is a drug that is used for chemotherapy in leukemia and other cancers. It inhibits S-phase specific DNA synthesis and ribonucleoside diphosphate reductase, so its stops the conversion of ribonucleotides to deoxyribonucleotides, therefore leading to cancer cell death.

  • Severe bone marrow depression
  • Severe liver and kidney impairment
  • Sickle-cell disease
  • Lactation
  • Concomitant use with didanosine and stavudine

Hydroxycarbamide may have the following side effects:

  • Bone marrow suppression
  • Nausea
  • Gastrointestinal irritation
  • Liver failure
  • Dysuria
  • Hyperuricemia
  • Leukemia
  • Severe myelosuppression

Take extra caution in patients with the following medines:

  • Patient with severe gastrointestinal intolerance
  • History of prior cytotoxic or radiation therapy
  • Renal and hepatic impairment
  • Children
  • Pregnancy

 

Interactions

Hydroxycarbamide may interact with the following medicines:

  • Interferon
  • Live vaccines
  • Didanosine and stavudine

 Signs of overdose include the following:

  • Acute mucocutaneous toxicity
  • Soreness
  • Violet erythema
  • Edema on palms and foot soles followed by scaling of hands and feet
  • Intense generalized hyperpigmentation of skin and severe acute stomatitis
