DIDANOSINE

Didanosine is a drug that inhibits the enzyme HIV nucleoside reverse transcriptase, thus blocking viral DNA synthesis and suppressing HIV replication.

  • Hypersensitivity to didanosine
  • Kidney impairment
  • Lactation
  • Concomitant use w/ allopurinol
  • Ribavirin
  • Tenofovir
  • Stavudine
  • Hydroxyurea

Didanosine may have the following side effects:

  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Immune reconstitution syndrome
  • Fat redistribution example central obesity
  • Peripheral and facial wasting
  • Breast enlargement
  • Buffalo hump
  • Optic neuritis
  • Headache
  • Anxiety
  • Increased risk of heart attacks
  • Diarrhoea
  • Rarely, noncirrhotic portal HTN, hepatic failure

Take extra caution in patients with the following medicines:

  • Patient with history and risk of pancreatitis
  • History of neuropathy
  • Hepatomegaly
  • Hepatic example chronic active hepatitis and renal impairment
  • Children
  • Pregnancy

Didanosine may interact with the following medicines:

  • Methadone
  • Pregnancy
  • Ganciclovir
  • Valganciclovir
  • Quinolones
  • Tetracyclines
  • Ketoconazole
  • Ribavirin
  • Tenofovir
  • Stavudine
  • Hydroxyurea

Signs of overdose include the following:

  • Pancreatitis
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Diarrhoea
  • Hyperuricaemia
  • Hepatic dysfunction
