CARMOFUR

Carmofur is an oral medicine which was derived from fluorouracil, with similar actions. It is used in the adjuvant treatment of colorectal cancer.

Carmofur is used in the treatment of treatment of breast and colorectal cancer.

  • Hypersensitivity to carmofur, fluorouracil, or any ingredient of the product
  • Poor nutritional state
  • Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase enzyme deficiency
  • Depressed bone marrow function (leukocyte count of ≤5000/mm3 and/or a platelet count of ≤100,000/m3)
  • Potentially serious infections
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Management of non-malignant disease

Carmofur may have the following side effects:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and possible vomiting
  • Mouth sores
  • Poor appetite
  • Watery eyes, sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Taste changes, metallic taste in mouth
  • Low blood counts

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Heart disease
  • Major surgery within previous 30 days
  • Previously received high-dose irradiation therapy to bone-marrow bearing areas like pelvis, spine, ribs or alkylating agents
  • Severe neurological toxicity
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Children
  • Elderly
