Overview & Facts

Knock knee correction is a procedure to correct knock knees or Genu Valgum. It is a condition that is usually found in children who have their legs spread out when their knees touch each other. This is first found in young children who are 3 and 5 years old, yet it can get resolved as the child grows.

If the issue is not corrected, braces may be used to rectify the knees. The child may also opt to wear corrective shoes. If this condition isn’t settled in adolescence, it might proceed through adulthood and can create issues.

Adults can also suffer from knock-knees when they have arthritis or severe knee injury.

Overview & Facts

There are two types of knock knees: physiologic and pathologic.

  • Physiologic Genu Valgum is due to normal growth.
  • Pathologic Genu Valgum is due to diseases such as rickets and fractures.

A sign that there is knock knees is observed when a child is standing. While standing, the knees will touch together or be closer to one another while the ankles will be far apart.

There are no imaging studies or x-rays that can diagnose knock knees.

 

TREATMENT

The most ideal approach to knock knee correction in adults is to reinforce the knee by completing a series of exercises. Different kinds of activities should be done to reinforce the knees. These include seated quadriceps flexion, leg strengthening activities and hamstring twists. Make sure to choose exercises that work to reinforce the muscles in your knee and not the ones that put a considerable pressure on the knee like running or mountain climbing.

Being overweight can likewise cause knock knees and as a result, you should lose weight to normal levels.

If you have attempted these different strategies and have no results. then corrective surgery may be done. This works best for children who are between the ages of 10 and 11 yet it may work for adults too. In adults, aside from corrective surgery, the doctor may suggest total knee replacement to deal with the problem.
