CARBIMAZOLE

Bivalirudin

Carbimazole is a drug that is metabolized to thiamazole in order for it to work as an antithyroid drug. It inhibits the production of thyroid hormones by blocking the organification of iodide and the coupling of iodothyronine residues.

Carbimazole is used in the following conditions:

  • As adjunct to radio-iodine therapy
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Preparation for thyroidectomy
  • Blocking-replacement

Do not give Carbimazole to patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Serious, pre-existing blood problems
  • Severe liver impairment

Carbimazole may have the following side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Arthralgia
  • Fever
  • Jaundice
  • Malaise
  • Mild gastric distress
  • Skin rashes
  • Pruritus
  • Taste disturbance
  • Bone marrow depression including neutropenia
  • Eosinophilia
  • Leucopenia
  • Rarely, pancytopenia/aplastic anemia and isolated thrombocytopenia
  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Agranulocytosis

Precautions

Special precautions should be observed by people with the following medical conditions:

  • Patients with intrathoracic goiter
  • Mild to moderate hepatic impairment
  • Children
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

 

Interactions

Carbimazole may interact with the following medicines:

  • Theophylline
  • Anticoagulants
