5 Health Benefits of Glutathione

Glutathione is an antioxidant naturally produced in the body’s cells. A number of factors can lower glutathione levels in the body, including:

  • poor nutrition
  • environmental toxin
  • stress, and
  • aging.

Aside from being produced naturally by the body, glutathione is also available as an oral supplement in capsule and liquid form.

Studies show that glutathione offer potential health benefits. Here are five of them:

1. Reduces oxidative stress

Excessively high levels of oxidative stress may put you at risk for diabetes, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Glutathione helps stave off the impact of oxidative stress, which may, in turn, reduce your risk of developing these diseases.

2. May improve psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells. Increased oxidative stress combined with a reduction in glutathione levels has been demonstrated to be associated with psoriasis. Previously, whey protein had been shown to increase glutathione levels.

A small study indicated that whey protein supplementation improved psoriasis with or without additional treatment. Researchers stated that more research is needed.

3. Reduces cell damage in alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Liver cell destruction may get worse because of a deficiency in antioxidants, including glutathione. This can lead to fatty liver disease in those who misuse alcohol and even those who don’t. Glutathione has been shown to improve liver health of individuals with alcoholic and nonalcoholic chronic fatty liver disease.

4. Improves insulin resistance in older individuals

A study found that glutathione can help in weight management and insulin resistance in older individuals who produce less glutathione. It showed that individuals with low glutathione levels burned less fat and stored more fat in their body. After their glutathione levels were increased with dietary supplementation, the individuals showed improved insulin resistance and fat burning.

5. May reduce the impact of uncontrolled diabetes

Long-term high blood sugar can lower glutathione levels in the body, which can lead to oxidative stress and tissue damage. A study found that boosting glutathione levels through lowered oxidative stress and damage in people with uncontrolled diabetes, despite high sugar levels.
