CAMPYLOBACTERIOSIS

Campylobacteriosis is a bacterial infection brought by the genus Campylobacter. The genus can be found in the intestine of raw poultry meat, and birds.

The infection can be acquired by digesting uncooked poultry foods. In some cases, the bacteria are present in seafood, food contact with animals, and meat.

Furthermore, children and infants have a higher risk of this infection than adults. However, it can still affect individuals of any age. It is also more common in the summer season.

SYMPTOMS

The infection may be experienced within a week, and the symptoms may occur a few days after eating the food infected with Campylobacter. Furthermore, symptoms of campylobacteriosis may include:

  • Bloating
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Occurence of bloody bowel movement
  • Belly cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

However, patients may experience no symptoms.

For patients with HIV, the bacteria can result in a severe infection in the patient’s bloodstream. If patients experience diarrhea and other signs, they must consult their doctor immediately.

Other symptoms which can be a sign of more serious infection are:

  • Difficulty of drinking due to vomiting or nausea
  • Bloody stool
  • High fever
  • Discomfort in rectum or gut area
  • Dizziness, dark pee, dry mouth, and other signs of dehydration
  • Diarrhea for more than two days

DIAGNOSIS

Some of the symptoms are commonly felt by patients whose infections are leading to serious conditions. Because of this, a proper diagnosis must be conducted. The doctors will collect a sample of their stool, and the patients will have to wait for a few days to get the result.

Bacteria can enter your bloodstream in exceedingly rare circumstances. This may result in a life-threatening infection. To see if this has happened, your healthcare professional will suggest a blood test.

TREATMENT

To avoid dehydration, patients should drink enough water as long as the diarrhea lasts. Also, antibiotics are one of the suggested treatments of doctors for patients aged 65 or older, those who have a weak immune system, and pregnant women.

Suppose the patient is allergic to antibiotics or if there is no effect on his/her condition. In that case, the doctors will request a laboratory test to determine what kind of antibiotic can help them. Moreover, antibiotics must be taken according to the doctor’s prescription.
