5 Important Facts You Need to Know About Asthma

If you are an asthmatic or have a loved one who is asthmatic, you probably know how hard it is to feel the burden of asthmatic symptoms. Every asthma attack comes with difficulty of breathing, wheezing, coughing and other unpleasant signs and symptoms which, even when relieved by medications, can affect a person’s way of life.

Asthma is a long-term and reversible condition wherein the airways are affected, resulting to difficulty of breathing, wheezing, chest pain or chest tightness.  To control asthma and its associated symptoms, we need to know these five important facts. Knowing these things about asthma may help us control the disease as well as improve the quality of life of asthma sufferers worldwide.

  1. Around 235 million people have asthma globally.

The World Health Organization estimates that there are millions of people around the world who are suffering from asthma presently. This means that we should find effective ways on how to control asthma attacks so that this will not lead to millions of deaths worldwide.

  1. Deaths from asthma will increase if we will not take action.

According to the World Health Organization, the number of people who will likely die from asthma will soon increase in the next 10 years if we don’t take urgent action. Asthma has no known cure but we can control the disease if proper diagnosis and treatment is done. We should educate people with asthma on the importance of good asthma control through treatment and early diagnosis.

  1. Inhaled corticosteroids can reduce asthma-related deaths.

Using inhaled corticosteroids prescribed by your doctor can dramatically improve symptoms, lessen attacks and can help ease inflammation in the airways, which can further decrease the risk for asthma-related deaths.

  1. Allergens, pollution and smoke can easily lead to asthma attacks

Most of us do not know that the strongest risk factors for developing asthma are exposure to indoor allergens like dust mites in the house and in carpets and furniture as well as air pollution for city dwellers. Animal dander can also trigger asthmatic attacks along with pollens and moulds. Tobacco smoke and chemical irritants in the workplace can also greatly lead to asthmatic attacks. If you are a smoker, you should quit as early as possible so that you will not always suffer from asthmatic attacks.

  1. Asthma can also triggered by emotional stress and exercise

Cold air can also trigger asthmatic attacks as well as physical exercise. If you are an asthmatic, you should better check with your doctor first before starting exercise. Asthma can also be triggered by emotional stress such as anger and anxiety, so always maintain a calm and happy disposition. Be stress-free and be asthma-free!
