VON RECKLINGHAUSEN’S NEUROFIBROMATOSIS

Von Recklinghausen’s neurofibromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized mainly by nerve tumor development. The condition can also cause skin problems and malformations in the bones. Furthermore, this condition is divided into three categories and neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is the most frequent type.

Neurofibromas are tumors that develop in the body’s tissues and organs as a result of this condition. Besides that, according to research, Von Recklinghausen’s disease is one of the most common hereditary illnesses, affecting around one in every 3,000 persons.

TYPES

Von Recklinghausen’s neurofibromatosis disease is divided into three types, including:

  • schwannomatosis, which is a variant of NF2
  • neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)
  • neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)

SYMPTOMS

The skin, as well as the peripheral nerve system, are both affected by Von Recklinghausen’s disease. The first signs and symptoms usually arise in childhood and are skin-related.

The characteristics of skin-affected Von Recklinghausen illness are:

  • Nerves or malignancies surrounding peripheral areas
  • Freckles at the bottom or at the groin
  • Tan patches on the skin of various sizes and forms

Additional symptoms of the illness of Von Recklinghausen are:

  • Tumor in the optic nerve
  • Liver enlargement
  • Lisch nodules
  • A suprarenal gland tumor

DIAGNOSIS

The existence of many symptoms influences the diagnosis. Tumors which may occur as a result of other diseases must be identified by your doctor. And your doctor will question you about the family history of your illness if you encounter symptoms of VRD. This helps to validate the diagnosis of the disease.

TREATMENT

Von Recklinghausen’s disease is a complicated disease. Many different organ systems in the body must be addressed during treatment. Adults must be screened against cancer caused by tumors on a regular basis.

Childhood therapy includes:

  • orthopedic assessment for the treatment of scoliosis or other curable bone
  •  defects of attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD)
  • Learning Disability Assessment

All patients should get a neurological test and an eye exam once a year.

In addition, many techniques may cure tumors, including:

  • Remove malignant tumors laparoscopically
  • Operation to remove neurological tumors
  • radiation therapy
  • chemotherapy

You’re more likely to get cancer if you have Von Recklinghausen’s disease. Tumors should be monitored by your doctor on a regular basis. They’ll be on the lookout for any changes that might suggest malignancy.
