Your doctor will get some information about your voice issues and diagnose you altogether. A topical anesthetic might be used to numb your tissues before the doctor utilizes one of these instruments to look at your vocal cords:

  • Mirror in the form of a long, rigid instrument with an angled mirror, which is inserted in the mouth
  • Flexible laryngoscope inserted through the nose
  • Rigid laryngoscope inserted through the mouth
  • Video stroboscope gives a slow-motion view of your vocal cords as they move
  • Sound (acoustic) analysis
  • Laryngeal electromyography to measure the electric impulses in your voice box muscles
