VACCINE, DIPHTHERIA AND TETANUS TOXOID

Diphtheria and tetanus toxoid vaccines are vaccines for active immunization against diphtheria and tetanus. They are composed of diphtheria and tetanus antigens which when given to the body can protect from the above mentioned diseases. A complete immunization course can offer protection for up to 10 years.

Diphtheria and tetanus toxoid vaccines are given for active immunization against tetanus and diphtheria, for primary immunisation, booster immunisation and tetanus prophylaxis in wound management.

Do not give Diphtheria and tetanus toxoid vaccines in those with anaphylaxis or other serious allergic reaction or a neurologic reaction following diphtheria or tetanus toxoid vaccination. It should not be given during poliomyelitis epidemic outbreaks.

Diphtheria and tetanus toxoid vaccines may give rise to the following side effects:

  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Rash
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Paresthesia
  • Seizure

Precautions

Extra caution should be observed in those with the following medical conditions:

  • Patients who have experienced serious Arthus-type reaction with prior doses of tetanus toxoid
  • History of bleeding disorders and/or patients on anticoagulant treatment
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • Severely immunocompromised patients
  • Infants <6 weeks
  • Pregnancy and lactation

 

Interactions

Diphtheria and tetanus toxoid vaccines may interact with the following medications:

  • Immunosuppressants e.g. cytotoxics
  • Corticosteroids
  • Irradiation

If you have used Diphtheria and tetanus toxoid vaccines more than the recommended dose, seek medical help immediately.
