TUMMY ACHE

A tummy ache may refer to pain in the abdomen, stomach cramps or a dull ache in the tummy. It’s not often a serious illness but it depends on the level of pain we are undergoing.

Having severe tummy ache is a greater call for concern.  If it starts suddenly, it should be regarded as a medical emergency, especially when the pain is located in a particular area.

Types

When you have pain and cramps when having your menstrual period, your may be suffering for period pain.

Experiencing sudden pain in the lower right portion of your stomach may be caused by appendicitis.

If there is a combination of cramps, diarrhoea, bloating and constipation, you are suffering for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Pain that goes down in your groin along with nausea and pain when urinating may be due to a kidney stone.

Too much pain in your tummy under the ribs on the right that lasts for an hour may be due to gallstones

 

Symptoms

A tummy ache may be accompanied by constipation, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, acid reflux, vomiting and stress.

DIAGNOSIS

Health experts can determine the cause of the pain by noting the characteristics, physical signs and by doing physical examination. Laboratory tests, radiology, and endoscopic testing may also be requested.

 

MEDICATIONS/TREATMENT

Lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes may be advised first.

Over-the-counter medications, including antacids that neutralized stomach acid may be given for quick relief.

If relief is not experienced within a few weeks, the doctor may give prescription medication or may advise surgery.
