TONGUE CANCER

Types

The most common type of tongue cancer is known as squamous cell carcinoma. This kind of cancer occurs:

  • On the skinsurface
  • In the lining of the mouth, nose, larynx, thyroid, and throat
  • In respiratory and digestive tractlining

Cancer of the tongue is classified according to stages and grades. The stages indicate how far the disease has spread. This stage has three classifications such as:

  • T indicates the size of the tumor. A small type of tumor isreferred to as T1 and the large one is T4
  • N indicates that the cancer has spread to lymph nodesof the neck and N0 means the cancer is not yet spread, while N3 means that the cancer has already spread to many lymph nodes
  • M refers to whether or not thereare additional growths in the body parts

The grade of cancer refers to how aggressive it is and how it is supposed to spread. Tongue cancer can be:

  • Low (slow-growing and unableto spread)
  • Moderate
  • High (very aggressive and able to spread)

SYMPTOMS

During the early stages of tongue cancer, usually, you may not notice any symptoms. But the most common early sign of tongue cancer is a sore on your tongue that doesn’t heal and bleeds easily or you might also notice tongue or mouth pain.

Tongue cancer might show some of the symptoms below like:

  • A red or white-colored patch on your tongue that continue
  • Tongue ulcer that remains over some time
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Numbness of the mouth
  • A sore throat that doesn’t heal
  • Bleeding coming from your tongue for no reason
  • A lump on the tongue that persists

Diagnosis

In diagnosing tongue cancer, your doctor will first ask you about your medical history.  Your doctor will ask you whether you smoke, drink, or if you ever tested as positive for the HPV virus. Then after that, they will conduct a physical examination of your mouth to look for any signs of cancer, and unhealed ulcers. They will also examine nearby lymph nodes, to check for swelling.

TREATMENT

The treatment for tongue cancer may vary on how big the tumor is and how far the cancer has spread. You might only need one treatment or a combination.

If the tongue cancer hasn’t spread yet, it can usually be treated with a small operation to remove the affected area. However, larger tumors needs a surgery known as partial glossectomy, in which a certain part of the tongue is going to be removed.

Doctors may also suggest chemotherapy to treat your cancer, it is in a form of surgery or radiation.
