Lucinactant is a lung surface acting agent that works by helping the lungs function normally. It is similar to the natural fluid in the lungs that helps maintain effective breathing.

This medication is used to treat or prevent respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in a premature baby whose lungs have not fully developed. Lucinactant may also be used for purposes to be determined by your doctor.

Do not use this drug to treat acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS).

It should be administered only by clinicians trained and experienced in incubation, ventilator management, and general care of premature infants. Monitor respiratory status frequently.

Most common side effects may include:

  • Bluish Lips or Skin
  • Cough
  • Coughing Up Blood
  • Fast Heartbeat
  • Fever or Chills
  • Pale Skin
  • Rapid, Shallow Breathing
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Slow Heartbeat
  • Sneezing
  • Troubled Breathing
  • Wheezing

Other side effects may include:

  • Clay-Colored Stools
  • Coma
  • Convulsions
  • Dark Urine
  • Decreased Urine Output
  • Fruit-Like Breath Odor
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Rapid, Deep Breathing
  • Rash
  • Restlessness
  • Sweating
  • Swelling of the Face, Ankles, or Hands
  • Unusual Bleeding or Bruising
  • Vomiting of Blood
  • Yellow Eyes or Skin


Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to Lucinactant or any other medicines.



Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. Tell your doctor or pharmacist all prescription and non-prescription or herbal products you are using. Also, follow your doctor’s instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.

Since Lucinactant is given in a controlled medical setting by a healthcare professional, an overdose is not likely to occur. However, an overdose of Lucinactant is not expected to produce life-threatening symptoms.
