SUMATRIPTAN

Sumatriptan is used for the treating migraine and cluster headaches. It is a synthetic medicine that belongs to the triptan class.

Uses

Sumatriptan is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headache, pain, and other migraine symptoms (including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light/sound). Prompt treatment helps you return to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications.

Warnings

Sumatriptan should not be used in the following medical conditions:

  • Basilar or hemiplegic or ophthalmoplegic migraine
  • History of heart attack or stroke
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Ischaemic heart disease
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides

Side Effects

Sumatriptan can give rise to side effects such as:

  • Transient hypertension
  • Hypotension
  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Weakness
  • Seizures
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Heat
  • Tightness in any part of body
  • Paraesthesia
  • Seizures
  • Injection site reactions
  • Irritation of nasal mucosa
  • Epistaxis
  • Rebound headache with frequent use

Potentially fatal are cardiac arrhythmias and heart attacks

Precautions

Take extra precaution in conditions such as:

  • Seizures
  • Presence of coronary risk factors
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Renal or hepatic impairment
  • Elderly
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Overdose & Brands

Symptoms of overdose include:

  • Tremors or shaking
  • Skin redness
  • Breathing problems
  • Blue-colored lips or fingernails
  • Vision problems
  • Watery eyes or mouth
  • Weakness
  • Lack of coordination
  • Seizure (convulsions)
