SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

Speech and language are skills that we need in communicating and exchanging conversation with others.  These skills can be developed in children through the help of parents or guardians. Try to talk and tell stories to a child regularly.

TYPES

Babies start to learn things while they are in the womb. They can hear and familiarize voices at that stage. The fastest learning stage of a child happens during ages two to five years old.

Speech and language milestones can determine whether a child shows achievement or development. Infants usually show certain skills like babbling and saying words like “mama”.

Children reach their milestone in different ways and this varies from child to child. Some children can learn these skills in advance, such as some girls. Some children have trouble in picking up information. They are what we call as slow learners.

Teaching the child at an early age is essential in their language and communication skills development. Soon, they can express their thoughts and ideas easily.

SYMPTOMS

Some factors can affect your child’s learning development. Some late bloomers have language delays because of developmental disorders such as autism or hearing problems.

Parents or guardians should monitor the development of a child’s speech and language skills. Problems in these skills can be resolved easily if they are acted upon immediately.

DIAGNOSIS

If you observe unusual things about your child’s learning, you should see a doctor who can help you with your child’s problem. Your child will be scheduled for follow up check-ups to monitor his or her condition. You can also inform or update your doctor regarding your child’s development.

Delayed speech skills can usually happen. Children learn in different ways, and some children can pick up information quicker than others. However, you should start worrying if your child doesn’t say any word by 18 months and up. Consult a doctor when this happens.

TREATMENT

There are ways to resolve speech and language problems. Here are some options to choose from:

Medical exam.  This is the first step in diagnosing and treating speech and language problems. To diagnose or to know what causes your child to have these problems, your doctor should first conduct a physical exam to see other physical problems such as trouble in hearing.

Language therapy. With therapy, your child can attend language therapy sessions with a speech-language therapist, or he or she can join a group session. This treatment will be based on your child’s age and problem.  The therapist will treat your child’s problems.
