SODIUM VALPROATE + VALPROIC ACID

Valproic acid and its sodium salt (sodium valproate) are antiepileptic drugs that are sometimes used to treat long term neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia, although they are not licensed for this use.

This medication is used to treat seizure disorders, mental/mood conditions like the manic phase of bipolar disorder, and to prevent migraine headaches. It works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

Sodium Valproate + Valproic Acid should not be used in the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Hepatic dysfunction or urea cycle disorders
  • Mitochondrial disorders
  • Suspected POLG-related disorder in children less than 2 years of age
  • Prophylaxis of migraine in pregnant women

Sodium Valproate + Valproic Acid may bring about some side effects which may include:

  • Black, tarry stools
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet
  • Blood in the urine or stools
  • Confusion
  • Cough or hoarseness
  • Crying
  • Delusions
  • Dementia
  • Depersonalization
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficult or labored breathing
  • Dysphoria
  • Euphoria
  • Fever or chills
  • General feeling of discomfort or illness
  • Headache
  • Joint pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lower back or side pain
  • Mental depression
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Nausea
  • Nervousness
  • Painful or difficult urination
  • Paranoia
  • Pinpoint red spots on the skin
  • Quick to react or overreact emotionally
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Rapidly changing moods
  • Runny nose
  • Shakiness in the legs, arms, hands, or feet
  • Shivering
  • Sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
  • Sore throat
  • Sweating
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Tingling of the hands or feet
  • Trembling or shaking of the hands or feet
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Unusual weight gain or loss
  • Vomiting

Precautions

Extra precautions should be observed with the following conditions:

  • Increased risk of hepatotoxicity in children less than 2 years
  • Congenital metabolic disorders
  • Organic brain disease or severe seizure disorders
  • HIV or cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection
  • SLE

  • Phenytoin
  • Pivmecillinam and pivampicillin
  • Rifampicin
  • Tigabine
  • Topiramate
  • Zidovudine

Symptoms of overdose include

  • Change in consciousness
  • Fainting
  • Loss Of Consciousness
  • Slow Or Irregular Heartbeat
