SLEEPING SICKNESS

Sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis) is a parasitic infections caused by tsetse flies. These parasites inhabit much of tropical Africa.

The infection may spread through your blood after being bitten by an infected fly. This results in swelling of the brain.

General symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Drowsiness during the Day
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Insomnia at Night
  • Mood Changes
  • Sleepiness (may be Uncontrollable)
  • Sweating
  • Swollen Lymph Nodes All Over The Body
  • Swollen, Red, Painful Nodule at Site of Fly Bite
  • Weakness

DIAGNOSIS

Samples from your blood or fluid from your cerebrospinal and lymph nodes may help diagnose the sleeping sickness disease.

 

TREATMENT

Treatment of this disease may include:

  • Eflornithine (for  b. gambienseonly)
  • Melarsoprol
  • Pentamidine (for  b. gambienseonly)
  • Suramin (Antrypol)
  • Some patients may receive combination therapy
