SKIN ALLERGY

A skin allergy develops when an allergy-causing substance (allergen) triggers an immune response that manifests on the skin.

Common symptoms of skin allergy include itchiness, redness and swelling.

Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) is thought to be due to the “leakiness” of the skin barrier, which causes it to dry out and become prone to irritation and inflammation by many environmental factors. Some people with eczema also have a food sensitivity, which can make eczema symptoms worse. Eczema causes itchy, red or dry skin that may “weep” or leak fluid that crusts over when scratched.

Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when your skin comes in direct contact with an allergen such as metal (e.g. jewelry) or plants (e.g. poison ivy).

Urticaria (Hives) are an inflammation of the skin triggered when the immune system releases histamine. This causes small blood vessels to leak, which leads to swelling in the skin.

Angioedema is swelling in the deep layers of the skin. It is often seen together with urticaria (hives). Angioedema often develops in soft tissues such as the eyelids, mouth or genitals.

DIAGNOSIS

Your doctor will perform a physical exam and ask about your symptoms. He may perform skin and blood tests to determine your specific allergy trigger/s.

TREATMENT

Your doctor will help you take steps to identify and avoid your allergy triggers. He may also prescribe medications, such as antihistamines and an anti-itch cream, that can help reduce your immune system reaction and ease symptoms.
