Salmon oil is derived from the tissues of oily fish. It contains omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), precursors of distinct eicosanoids which curb inflammation within the body and have other health benefits, such as treating hypertriglyceridemia.
Fish oil and omega-three fatty acids had been studied in other conditions, such as depression, nervousness, cancer, and macular degeneration, but advantages in these conditions have not been verified.
The fish used as sources do not produce omega-3 fatty acids, but instead accumulate them by ingesting both microalgae and prey fish which have accrued omega-3 fatty acids.
