Description: Reteplase is a recombinant plasminogen activator that works by activating a substance that helps to break up blood clots.

How to use Reteplase

  • Always refer to your doctors instructions before taking this medication. Duration and dosage will be determined by your medical condition and its response to the medication. Make sure to take this mediciation in the prescribed amount and time period even after symptoms disappear. Discontinuing the medication before completion of treatment may cause incomplete treatment of condition. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor

    • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
  • Serious side effects (inform your doctor immediately)
    • Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black, tarry stools; bleeding at the injection site; chest pain; severe bleeding; sudden, severe headache; trouble breathing; vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds.

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor
    • Allergy to the medication or any allergies
    • Medical History of disease or infection in the heart, brain, or blood vessels; severe liver or kidney disease; blood in the urine or stool; a stomach ulcer that is bleeding; high blood pressure; or bleeding in your eye because of diabetes or other conditions; you are taking blood thinners; have an aneurysm, heart or blood vessel defects, bleeding disorders, severe uncontrolled high blood pressure, a history of stroke, or internal bleeding; you have had brain or spinal surgery; or you have suffered recent trauma or you have had recent major surgery
  • If you are planning to be pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of use with your doctor.
  • It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Before breast-feeding, consult your physician.

 

Interactions

Taking multiple drugs may affect how medications work and/or cause unwanted side effects. List down all the medications you are taking and inform your physician and pharmacist. Do not take, discontinue, or alter any dose of medications without prior approval of your physician.

    • Blood thinners (eg, warfarin, heparin, enoxaparin) because the risk of bleeding will be increased
