RALTEGRAVIR

Raltegravir is a drug that belongs to a class of medicines known as HIV integrase inhibitors. HIV integrase is an enzyme necessary for insertion of viral DNA into the host cell genome. This further inhibits viral gene expression and replication.

It is active against HIV-1 and HIV-2.

Raltegravir is used to treat HIV-1 infection.

Raltegravir should not be used by people who are allergic to it. Do not give in lactating women.

Raltegravir may have the following side effects such as:

  • Rash
  • Myopathy
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • Osteonecrosis
  • Increased creatine phosphokinase
  • Immune reconstitution syndrome
  • Depression
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Paranoia
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Abnormal dreams
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Asthenia
  • Fatigue
  • Vertigo
  • Hyperactivity
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Gastritis
  • Flatulence
  • Increased transaminases and bilirubin
  • Hepatitis
  • Renal failure
  • Increased triglycerides and cholesterol
  • Hyperglycaemia
  • Neutropenia
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • Organ dysfunction (e.g. hepatic failure)

Precautions

Precautions should be observed in the following cases:

  • History of myopathy
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • Depression
  • Psychiatric illness
  • Concomitant rifampicin treatment
  • Severe hepatic impairment (e.g. chronic hepatitis B or C)
  • Children
  • Pregnancy

 

Interactions

Raltegravir may interact with rifampicin and Al- and Mg-containing antacids.

If you think you have overdosed, seek medical help immediately.
